True Buddhism
Brief history of Buddhism of the Original Mystic Cause
The pure stream of the Law for more than 750 years
Nichiren Shoshu has its roots in the fact that Nichiren Daishonin, who made his advent in Japan on 16 February 1222, declared the establishment of his own doctrine, based on his enlightenment to the essential Law of the Original Buddha of the infinite past, Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, on 28 April 1253, when he was 32 years old, after having examined the entirety of Buddhism since he became a priest when he was 12 years old.
Subsequently, Nichiren Daishonin dedicated his life to the propagation of the Great Law of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, while he taught his disciples and lay believers, despite enduring persecutions and accusations, such as the night attack to his hut in Kamakura, an attempt to behead him in Tatsunokuchi or his exile on two occasions. Later on, on 12 October 1279, Nichiren Daishonin inscribed the Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of Honmon, as the object of worship for eternal happiness and prosperity for all humanity in the world.
On 13 October 1282, Nichiren Daishonin died solemnly and peacefully, after having selected Nikko Shonin as the Second Founder and having transmitted to him all the profound teachings of Buddhism.

Subsequently, Hakiri Sanenaga, the Lord of the area of Minobu where Nikko Shonin resided as the second High Priest and Chief Priest of Minobuzan Kuonji temple, started to perform slanderous acts against Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. Thus, in the spring of 1289, Nikko Shonin left Mt. Minobu with his disciples, headed by Nichimoku Shonin, taking with him all Nichiren Daishonin’s sacred treasures, including the Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of Honmon. And, in October the following year (1290) he founded Taisekiji, in a place called Ueno, at the foot of Mount Fuji, thanks to the contribution and protection of the Lord of the place, Nanjo Tokimitsu.
Since then, and for more than 700 years, Nichiren Daishonin’s True Buddhism has been passed on and correctly safeguarded at Nichiren Shoshu Head Temple Taisekiji.
Today, Taisekiji has become the essential great place for worldwide extensive propagation (kosen-rufu), which all Nichiren Shoshu believers of the world visit with profound devotion and yearning.
